ABSTRACT
After a fitful start which had some observers comparing it to the hula hoop, skateboarding has gone on to achieve a seemingly permanent place in the pantheon of American sports. It grew hesitantly along California beach walks in the early 1960s, assuming the dimensions of a nationwide craze by late 1964.
