ABSTRACT

Public health, public ethics, and public morality fell before the power, money, manipulation, and control of the tobacco industry. The concept of history, the continuity of the earth, seems on nearly every occasion to have been dismissed. Right livelihood, suggest the Buddhists, as was explained by Jean Sadako King, former Lieutenant Governor of Hawaii. In her address before the Fifth International Seminar on Buddhism and Leadership for Peace in Korea, she explained: Most people would rather earn their living by engaging in work that doesnt harm others or the planet. The only reasonable explanation in the current political climate is that women dont have the financial backing of business interests. Marcia Marks, an activist for health and the environment, reviewed my manuscript and remarked that my writing seems to express anger. She said she was concerned that it might turn off some readers.
