ABSTRACT

The presidency has been described as the loneliest job in the world, and in terms of the heavy responsibilities of the office, it no doubt is. No president, however, comes into office truly alone. Almost every president has been accompanied to the White House by a wife, and all have had family and friends who, along with the first lady, form a network of support for the president. Family members and friends of the president do not remain in the background long, however. As time passes in the media age, they become more prominent in the public eye, and, through association, they may assist or harm the administration as the president attempts to carve a place in history.
