Incest, or the sexual abuse of a child by a family member, accounts for approximately 25 per cent of all cases of child sexual abuse. For an overview of the research comparing outcomes for children abused by family members with those of children abused by nonfamily members, see FISCHER & McDONALD. Despite work indicating significant differences between the two forms of abuse, the literature often fails to differentiate between the two. Except where otherwise noted, this entry is limited to literature specific to incest. For a more general review, see the APSAC Handbook on Child Maltreatment, edited by BRIERE et al. This handbook includes a compilation of essays on all aspects of child abuse (including incest) by the leading professionals in the field.
