ABSTRACT
The Alto Parana flows through Sao Paulo State of Brazil, where it is joined by a number of major tributaries; these are the Paranapanema, the Tiete, which traverses the whole state, the Pardo Canoas, the Inferno, Anhanguera, Turvo and Dourados. The Paraguay River, the greatest of the Parana’s tributaries, rises in the Mato Grosso of Brazil at a height of 980 feet (299 m) and for a while acts as the boundary between Paraguay and Brazil; then, after 950 miles (1530 km) of its course it enters Paraguay, which it bisects from north to south for 200 miles (322 km) before it reaches the Argentine border near Asuncion, where it is joined by the Rio Pilcomayo. It then acts as the border between Paraguay and Argentina for a further 140 miles (225 km) until it is joined by the Bermejo; then, after a final 40 miles (64.4 km) as a border river it flows into the Parana above the town of Corrientes after a total course of 1584 miles (2550 km). At the point of its confluence with the Paraguay, the Parana turns due south to become a river of the plains with an extensive floodplain up to 24 miles (38.6 km) in width.
