ABSTRACT
It was Lord Kelvin who showed that the theory of heat engines led to the definition of an absolute thermodynamic scale of temperature that was independent of the properties of any real substance. He showed further that this scale of temperature was identical to the ideal gas scale of temperature. He went on to show how temper atures measured with a constant-volume gas thermometer filled with hydrogen could be corrected to temperatures measured on the absolute scale.
