ABSTRACT

Algeria is the central state in the Maghreb or Far West of the Arab world and involve in African affairs than other countries in the Maghreb. Algeria is in the centre of the littoral of the western Mediterranean basin in the approaches to the Strait of Gibraltar. The survival of Berber dialects provides a clear indication of Algeria's eccentric position in the Arab world, while the importance of French as a language illustrates the strong European connections. Algeria occupied a large part of the fluctuating area between the ancient kingdoms of Morocco and Egypt and only became a sovereign state during the colonial period. By 1993, the underground movement had developed into the Group Islamique Arm (GIA), which was dominant in the central and northern areas, including the capital, Algiers, and the Mouvement Islamique Arm (MIA) which controlled large areas of the east and west.
