ABSTRACT
The oldest university on the territory of today’s Federal Republic of Germany is Heidelberg, which was founded in 1386. It is not normally regarded as the oldest German university, however; that honor is accorded, on the basis of what at the time was seen as constituting the geographical entity of Germany, to the University of Prague, which dates from 1348.
