Obsidian is a kind of volcanic glass, normally dark blue to black in colour. It is exceptionally hard, fractures in the same way as flint, and, like flint, was employed to provide razorsharp cutting edges for tools (including knives and sickles) and weapons (including arrowheads). Studies of the techniques of manufacture of marble figurines have suggested that obsidian implements were among the tools employed.
