ABSTRACT

Valentin (1952) classified coasts into two main groups, with an intermediate stage:

advancing coasts, where marine deposition, or the uplift of the land is dominant. Typical coastal features include raised beaches, spits, bars, sand dunes and saltmarshes

retreating coastlines, where marine erosion or the submergence of the land is dominant. Typical coastal features include wave cut platforms, arches, stacks, rias and fjords

an intermediate stage, which he called “stationary,” where deposition = submergence or erosion = uplift.
