a steep-sided ravine in desert and semidesert areas, usually streamless, but sometimes containing a torrent (flash flood) for a short period after heavy rain. Also known as an arroyo in the Americas. The infrequency of flash floods compared to the great numbers of wadis in some areas suggests that they were created at a time when storms were more frequent and severe.
