ABSTRACT
Networks may be broadly classified as either wide area networks (WANs) or local area networks (LANs). Security is needed for both. Computers in a WAN may be thousands of miles apart; computers in a LAN are usually closer together, such as in the same building or plant. Data-switching equipment may be used in LANs but not as often in WANs.
