ABSTRACT
Networks may be broadly classified as either wide area networks (WANs) or local area networks (LANs). Both need network security. The computers in a WAN may be anywhere from several to thousands of miles apart; the computers in a LAN are usually closer together, all in one building or plant. Data switching equipment is common in LANs, rare in WANs.
