Machine The machine is slang for the Tote. The OED identifies this as originally a New Zealand expression, its first attestation, from 1889, being ‘What a lot [of money] you left behind in the “machine”.’ Its popularity today probably derives from the impression it gives of the Tote’s impersonality, in contrast with the all too obvious personalities of the bookmakers in the ring.
