ABSTRACT
As the twentieth century has progressed, life, society, and technology have become ever more complex compared with the relative simplicity of earlier times. Institutional, economic, societal, environmental, and technological problems have increased to the point where one wonders whether the twenty-first century, let alone the more distant future, can be safely attained in any sort of civilized form.
