ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to bring together some of the relevant facts on the different areas presently available for outdoor recreation. 1 Outdoor recreation areas are as diverse as the activities they encompass. They differ in size, type, and location; serve numerous purposes; are used with highly variable intensities; and are administered by a large number of different public and private agencies. At the federal level alone there are more than twenty agencies with programs that include some aspect of outdoor recreation, A similar multiplicity of agency programs is found at the state level throughout the country. 2 And the situation is much the same for county and city governments.
