ABSTRACT

The movement for the preservation or establishment of wilderness or primitive areas is not a development of recent years only; it began before Yellowstone was established, and became a fairly strong movement late in Mather's administration. In recent years, however, it has gained more and more support, from conservation organizations and from the general public.
