ABSTRACT
As noted in chapter 1, the most basic and dominant fact about federal lands is that they are used by private persons, groups, and corporations. In the pages that follow I will discuss the primary uses of the U.S. federal lands—grazing, timber harvesting, the extraction of coal and nonfuel minerals, as well as outdoor recreation and other activities.
