ABSTRACT

The survey in chapter 5 revealed immense diversity rather than consistent points of similarity in the situation and performance of the land development projects that were studied. Past experience therefore is not always useful as a guide for policy makers. Nonetheless it is possible to single out a number of factors that are crucial in formulating policies to expand the tropical land frontier. In this chapter the project histories are drawn upon to illustrate those elements bearing on the selection of areas and beneficiaries in tropical land development and on decisions for investment in infrastructure to expand the forest frontier.
