the subject of English involves the study of communication through language in its spoken, written and non-verbal forms. In England, the National Curriculum and the Key Stage 3 Literacy strategy objectives state explicitly what pupils should be taught to do under the headings of ‘Reading’, ‘Writing’ and ‘Speaking and Listening’. When an English teacher selects a resource for a lesson from the seemingly endless supply of fiction and non-fiction available, the central focus is on the language of the material: how it is presented, what it is communicating and how engagement with it will develop further their pupils’ understanding of, and ability to use, language expressively.
