ABSTRACT

The role of the Learning Support Unit (LSU) manager, how it is defined and communicated within the school, is vitally important. The role has various functions, including: Promoting the LSU as a whole school initiative. Assessing pupils' needs and planning an appropriate programme of intervention. Communicating with other staff about pupils and their needs. Influencing the practice of other staff, including providing training and support to other staff. Linking to the Pastoral Support Programme process. And developing and maintaining links with families and other agencies. Part of the LSU manager's role for pupils who are accessing support is to develop links with other agencies, for example Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), Social Services and the LEA Behaviour Support Team. When considering the LSU as a whole school initiative to give pupils support in developing their emotional, social and learning skills, the school governors have an important role to play.
