ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses that pupils who have received two fixed term exclusions need to be referred for additional support and considered at the referral panel. It considers two approaches used by Learning Support Unit (LSU) staff to ensure that other staff are engaged in the process of re-integration. The chapter also considers an approach where the teacher and LSU manager 'swop roles' in relation to the pupil, to re-establish a relationship between a pupil and a teacher that has broken down. It explores the use of solution focused meetings to prepare staff for a pupil's re-integration. The examples illustrate the approach to working with other staff in the school to facilitate re-integration. Communication with other staff prior to the re-integration is vital if there is to be a consistent approach used with pupils who are re-integrating after an intervention in the LSU.
