ABSTRACT

When planning the programme within the Learning Support Unit (LSU) it is important to bear in mind that the pupils who are referred for additional support will have complex needs. The case study shows an example of a structured programme that a number of primary schools in Hammersmith and Fulham can access. The programme described above is highly structured and works with a small cohort of pupils for a set block of time, providing both centre-based intervention concentrating on academic and social skills and support within their mainstream schools during and after the programme. Whilst in the unit pupils have a mixture of literacy, numeracy and social skills games to develop their group work skills. The pupils who are referred to the LSU need the time and opportunity to develop their interpersonal and social skills, and to reflect on the strategies needed to cope successfully within a school.
