ABSTRACT

Treasure Island has inspired many adaptations, including no fewer than three Disney films (see resource list p. 91). Studying a film adaptation alongside the original text provides opportunities for children to work with a medium which is familiar to them. They will already have a wealth of knowledge and experience about the way in which films work, which will help them to make implicit knowledge explicit. Discussion of issues such as reading/viewing preferences, exploration of the choices made in the process of adaptation, representations and consideration of intended audience, etc. will support the development of critical literacy.
