ABSTRACT

Treasure Island is narrated by Jim Hawkins. At the outset Jim explains that he has been asked to record the adventure by his companions. There are places in the narrative where we are reminded of the narrative context, where the narrator speaks directly to the reader. For example, ‘I am not allowed to be more plain’ (p. 87), and in Chapter 29 when Silver is presented with the black spot:

The printed side had been blackened with wood ash, which already had begun to come off and soil my fingers; on the blank side had been written with the same material the one word “Depposed”. I have that curiosity beside me at this moment; but not a trace of writing now remains beyond a single scratch, such as a man might make with his thumb-nail. (p. 253)
