ABSTRACT

What is photosynthesis? Can you name a megalopolis? How would you describe a cartouche? These questions could easily come from a popular quiz programme - and underline our endless fascination with knowledge about a whole range of different subjects. Children, too, rise readily to the challenge presented by the subjects they encounter at Key Stage 2 - absorbing curious details and intriguing facts and learning to spell and define a variety of complex and intricate new words. Fortunately, much of what they learn will not only help them to understand specific subjects and increase and extend their word power but will also add a further important dimension to their knowledge of word making and building.
