ABSTRACT

Our language would surely not have gone through so many changes and developments it playing with words were not such great fun. Throughout history, human beings have indulged their fascination with words, not just as a necessity for communication, but also for enjoyment, amusement and challenge. The Greeks and Romans loved puns and riddles and used them profusely. Shakespeare excelled at puns; Lewis Carroll was famous for his love of word games; and crosswords, not yet a century old, are now reported to be the most popular word puzzles in the world. Once you have aroused children's interest in the sheer fun of playing around with words, you will have converted them to a love of language for the rest of their lives.
