ABSTRACT

Reading is, quite rightly, considered to be at the very heart of the primary curriculum. The reasons for that can be stated quite simply:

The children's progress in learning to read will have an enormous influence on how they tackle almost everything else in school.

The government has placed literacy (reading and writing) at the heart of its drive to raise standards in schools.

Looking further ahead, becoming ‘a reader’ in the ways we have defined it in this book is a life-enhancing experience in so many ways.
