ABSTRACT

The rate at which we consume natural resources is putting the survival of the planet at risk. Few countries are self-sufficient, and competition is accelerating for the control of access to raw materials. Water, for example, is widely predicted to become the major motive for armed conflict in the 21st century. Even more alarming is the growth of global energy consumption, which, if it continues at present rates, will change the climate in ways that endanger the very survival of humanity. America’s role is critical because it is by far the largest consumer of energy in the world.
