ABSTRACT
The world faces some formidable challenges. If it were possible to make progress on five key ones – poverty, power, war, health and the natural environment – there would be grounds for real optimism about the prospects of moving towards a world of greater fairness and justice. The catalogue of problems is grim but they are all, in principle, open to solution.
