ABSTRACT
Literacy is simultaneously a functional need for modern societies, a basic tool for individual advancement, and a rich benefit in everybody’s personal life. As modern trade and industry have spread, so have general literacy levels. In most countries, discrimination at school and at home means that more women than men are illiterate and girls still lag behind boys in worldwide school enrolment statistics.
