ABSTRACT

The data presented in the preceding chapter showed that Africa is the recipient of a significant share of GEF-SGP projects – though not the biggest recipient. Chapter 6 furthermore drew attention to the close cooperation between states, NGOs and CBOs. This chapter aims to explore these relations as they have developed over time in Africa. Taking a closer look at the history of nature conservation, including colonial times, may also shed light on the special place Africa seems to occupy in nature conservation, if not always in attracting the majority of environmental philanthropy, then at least in terms of iconography and images of nature and environmental threats. Many of the best known ENGOs actually evolved out of conservation initiatives in Africa, as will be shown below.
