ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter we discussed exports of ivory from Africa, as well as the critical role of intra-Africa trade. Although accounting for the exports of raw ivory is not easy, it is not nearly as difficult as tracing the exports of worked ivory as these may range from bulk shipment to individual tourist purchases and can cover such diverse commodities as jewellery, carvings, chess sets, furniture inlays, parts of musical instruments and so on. Thus no consistent statistics on worked ivory exports from Africa are available, although we were at least able to provide some idea of the elaborate links between the raw and worked ivory trade for Southern Africa.
