      ABSTRACT

The majority of recent recycling trials have tended to focus primarily on the methods of collection and to a lesser degree on the subsequent processing opera•׳ tions; many have given little consideration to the final reprocessing activities. The design of any recycling scheme should, however, consider these three stages in reverse order. W hen considering the materials to be recycled, the markets for these materials (the reprocessors) should first be identified and the requirements of these markets, such as the grades and types of material accepted, the forms and levels of contamination tolerated and the volumes and methods of delivery required, should be fully understood. The extent and methods of processing can then be designed in order to produce materials which will meet the markets’ specifications and in turn, the methods of collection selected, which will be most appropriate to feed the processing operations.
