      ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter we saw that there are many different ways of collecting commingled recyclable materials. While these methods of collection are clearly different, they all have one thing in common in that, following collection, the mixture of materials needs to be separated. This activity is called ‘processing’ and is carried out in a central facility. Such facilities have been called by various names such as Sorting Plants or Recycling Plants, but the most commonly used term is the American description of a Materials Recovery Facility or MRF (pronounced ‘murph’).
