ABSTRACT

Major changes took place in the use of fossil fuels for power generation during the first five years of electricity privatization Fable 6.1). The total use of fossil fuels has been falhng since electricity privatization, reflecting in large measure the improved performance of nuclear plant withn a broadly stable total fuelling requirement. Also, there has been a significant shift to natural gas away from coal, whose share of this market fell from 68 per cent in 1990 to 51 per cent in 1994. By the end of 1994, the capacity of gas-fired combined-cycle gas turbine plant (CCGq already operating or committed was sufficient to make it almost certain that by 1998 the use of coal in power stations would be no more than about half the level in 1990. T h s major re-orientation of fuel supply can be understood only by looking at the situation prior to 1990.
