ABSTRACT

Lesotho is an extremely rugged, mountainous country set high in the Drakensberg. Its vegetation is totally unlike any other SADCC member state because of its high elevation and southerly location. Studies from the adjacent Natal Drakensberg to the north, suggest that the vegetation in Lesotho should fall into three altitudinal belts. In these belts the natural vegetation should be:

i) a Montane belt between 1,280-1,830 masl with a natural vegetation of Podocarpus Forest;

ii) a Sub-Alpine belt between 1,830-2,865 masl with a natural bushland vegetation; and

iii) an Alpine belt above 2,865 masl with alpine grassland and heathland communities.
