ABSTRACT

The vegetation of Tanzania comprises a wide range of types including tall closed forests, many kinds of woodland, open grassland, and areas of semi-desert. The closed canopy forests occur in very restricted areas and are mostly limited to uplands and coastal lowlands. However, the most common types of vegetation are the miombo woodlands and related wooded grasslands. The closed forests and denser miombo woodlands account for 41.2% of the land area or about 370,000 km2 • In contrast, the drier woodlands and wooded grasslands cover approximately 186,700 km 2 and account for 22.2% of the land area.
