ABSTRACT
Acountry's high level of economic development does not guarantee suitable conditions for sustainable urban development. In fact, the intense industrial activity associated with economic development can cause the accumulation of toxic substances in the environment. On the other hand, economic wealth can help assure funding for sustainability initiatives. Here we describe efforts to initiate meaningful change in four cities with very different circumstances.
