ABSTRACT

The new patterns of global organization must also reflect the global interconnectedness of human activity. Through telecommunications, family members can remain close even when they are separated by oceans, so similarly with businesses. International travel and trade occur with relative ease. Nationstates, with their firm boundaries, formal relations, and jealously-guarded prerogatives, can sometimes pose barriers to interconnectedness. Local authorities associating within and across the dissolving national boundaries provide a mode of organization that is more compatible with the interconnectedness of humanity.
