ABSTRACT
Programme Overview In January 1993, the five local authority associations in the UK set up a joint Local Agenda 21 Steering Group to develop and direct a campaign aimed at ensuringa hroad-hased response by local government to Agenda 21. The campaign, Local Agenda 21 UK, includes the production of training and ce materials, the organization of seminars and conferences, and the exchange of info and expertise between participating local authorities. As a result, more than half of the local authorities in the UK have taken major steps towards undertaking Local Agenda 21 activities. The initiative has enabled local authorities to strengthen their commitment to the environment, local economic and social development, and local democracy.
