ABSTRACT

In September 1988, a book entitled The Green Consumer Guide was published in Britain, written by John Elkington and Julia Hailes. The book was a practical guide for consumers, describing the links between consumer lifestyle and environmental problems, analysing the environmental effects of a wide range of consumer products, and giving advice on how consumers could change their lifestyle so that it was more environmentally sustainable. It was published to coincide with Britain's first Green Consumer Week. Its publication also coincided (fortuitously) with Mrs Thatcher's references to the environment in her speeches to the Royal Society (September) and the Conservative Party conference (October).
