ABSTRACT

It is vital to bring the deforestation of tropical rain forests under control, but how can this be done? Unfortunately, there are no quick solutions and it is unlikely that tropical rain forest management can be made fully sustainable quickly either. A long-term programme of action is required to tackle both problems over the next 10 to 20 years, and the longer we wait before starting the longer it will take. The more time is lost on attempting facile ‘quick fixes’ the more money will be wasted and the greater the loss of forest.
