ABSTRACT
Drawing from the orientation and arguments of Caring for the Earth, and from the Strategies for National Sustainable Development (Carew-Reid, 1994), we can identify five fundamental propositions that underlie this attempt to integrate population into strategies for sustainable development. Since all five refer to ‘development’ it will be useful to begin with a brief statement of what we imply by development.
