ABSTRACT

The feminist critical project is dedicated to exposing male hegemony in culture as well as opening a space for women to make culture. The standard cultural-feminist answer is that the feminist critical project is important because one of the crucial tools of male domination is the silencing of women's voices. Feminist criticism concentrated on literary culture, exhuming forgotten or neglected women writers and challenging the representation of women in patriarchal culture. Feminist cultural studies are broader than feminist literary criticism. The emergence of feminist literary criticism as an exemplar of feminist cultural studies responded to ongoing political struggles both within and outside of the university. Feminist criticism in the British and American women's movements concentrated on this aspect of sexism. The feminist erotica business is booming, both in response to the theoretical claim that erotica and porn can be differentiated and in response to the notion that women deserve the same 'rights' as men.
