ABSTRACT

In Chapter 4 we presented a schema of knowledge categories, in which the four basic types of knowledge — facts, procedures, concepts and principles — are further subdivided. These sub-categories, listed in the outer ring of our circular schema, are a useful framework for discussing the influence of the detailed, intermediate objectives on the selection of instructional tactics. We shall take the categories one at a time and consider some of the factors that influence our lesson planning decisions. The basic definitions and short descriptions of each category and sub-category of our schema may be found in Chapter 4, Table 4.1 on p 43. It may be useful to refer to this diagram while reading this chapter.
