ABSTRACT

In this final section of the book, we move towards possible applications of the ideas discussed in Parts II and III to a variety of pedagogical problems. In Chapter 12 we shall look back to the model originally outlined in Chapter 5 and discuss implications for education at different age-ranges. In this chapter we examine contrasting ideas on education and teaching which can be as polarized as the distinctions met previously between Style A and Style B thinking, and consider the possible effects of alternative styles of teaching on pupils’ attempts at learning. Stop and Think

Try to think of instances from your own experience of teaching which you would describe as either formal or informal.

What would you see as the likely advantages and disadvantages of each approach?

Would it be desirable and possible to develop an integrated approach to teaching which balanced both methods, or must teachers necessarily choose one or other style?
