ABSTRACT

This section contains the last of the historical extracts, but presented as a bridge between Part I and Part II. This extract was written in 1945; it thus acts as a bridge in time. It introduces another type of thinking — productive thinking — which, added to associative and analytic thinking, completes the trio mentioned earlier. Finally this ‘bridge passage’ will serve as an introduction to a series of research studies on student learning which form the main core of Chapter 4. These studies make considerable use of students’ introspections about their experiences of studying. It therefore seems sensible to present this final extract as a learning experiment — an opportunity for careful introspection about the reader’s own approaches to studying.
