ABSTRACT

In this final chapter, it seems appropriate to be looking forward positively whilst acknowledging the need for realism in a climate characterised by economic stringency. We are not going to make wild recommendations which involve spending thousands of pounds, but any change to the system is bound to have some cost or at least a redirection of resources. As this is a practical guide, we have set these recommendations within a framework of an ‘action plan’ to encourage a feeling that ‘something can be done’ to move practice forward and that there are alternatives to these kinds of comments:

‘We do try to work as a team, but there is never enough time to meet.’

‘My workload is too big to be in everyone’s team.’

‘Mrs A. doesn’t understand what we’re trying to do.’

‘Meetings are just a waste of time.’

‘If I spend time talking to you, there won’t be time for me to do my real work, with Johnny and Mary.’

‘We’ve tried teamwork and it doesn’t work.’
