ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses the structure of the Code of Practice, and highlights some of the practical implications of partnership through the various stages of identification, assessment, provision and review, as well as in the development of school Special Educational Needs (SEN) policies. It explores the opportunities for professionals to encourage and exploit the participation of parents in the full process: from identification of a child's difficulties, through both school-based and statutory assessment, to monitoring and reviewing progress. The demands on parents and professionals alike in establishing a meaningful, constructive, productive and sustainable partnership in SEN are many and challenging. Parent partnership schemes have grown into co-operative and mutually beneficial forums for discussion and debate, and offer an opportunity for all parties to enlighten each other as to their concerns, constraints and opportunities for constructive development.
